I was born in 1966 and I grew up in a small town in the south of Zealand in Denmark. I got my first camera when I was around 10, and I still remember the excitement when you handed in your roll of film to the local photo shop and had to wait up to a week to get the developed pictures back.
Fast forward around 10 years where I find myself in the Royal Danish Air Force working with communications. Here I had a very good friend / colleague who were into photography and when he bought a brand-new Nikon SLR, he gave me his old SLR together with a couple of lenses.
This can probably be marked as the real birth of my photography interest, because with an almost manual SLR in hand, I was forced to learn why my images were exposed too dark or too bright or out-of-focus and what I could do about it. So, I read a couple of books about the basics of photography, but most important – I shot a lot of film. The ‘trial-and-error’ method is still the best way to learn.
Again, fast forward to the beginning of the 90’s. I left the Air Force with a luggage full of memories and knowledge. During my time in communications in the Air Force I witnessed how computers increasingly took over the traditional ways of communicating, and I had developed a keen interest in IT. I decided to pursue a career within this field, and I started an education with that in mind.
Around the same time, I met my wife and quite quickly we got a daughter, so due to family life and my IT education, I did not really develop my photography over the next years – although I still took a lot of pictures.
At some point my good, old SLR gave up on life and I bought my first digital camera – a prosumer 4-megapixel HP Photosmart 850, which was a fine camera for my purpose at that time.
However, a couple of years later I found that I missed the versatility of the SLR, so it was time for my first DSLR – the Canon EOS 400D and a 17-85 and 70-300 lens. Wauw – what an upgrade that was!
Meanwhile, I had already been working in a couple of different IT positions, but in 2007 I found the job that I hold to this day as a Systems Specialist in a small company dealing with digital signage. In relation with my work, I have traveled a lot, as we have customers all over the world. However, in the last years the travel activity has been minimal – both due to the Covid pandemic, but also because everything can be handled online today.
Besides photography I have a great passion for football, and I have been a coach in my local football club for 20 years – coaching mainly girls’ teams. However, I am currently taking a break from the coaching – mostly due to heavy workload.
Of course, that leaves me with more time for my photography, and after owning the Canon EOS 400D, the 50D, the 700D, the 7D and the 7D Mark II, I have now switched to mirrorless with my Canon EOS R5.
As I am mostly into landscape photography, I have also developed a passion for the outdoors – there is no better feeling than getting up early, driving and hiking to some beach to sit and watch (and shoot) the sunrise.
